Grey Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis
This American squirrel was once confined to the Zoological gardens in Regent`s Park. Some were released and they bred and spread the length of Britain. This species is regularly seen on the Kinson Common and is very well established. Its light-grey fur coat and bushy tail is a familiar sight as it scampers at ground level or journeys along from tree to tree in the high canopies.
Food. Nuts, roots, berries, plants and fingi. It also eats birds` eggs and insects.
Breeding. Two breeding seasons. The young are raised in drey nests which are built in tall trees and are untidy structures built using twigs, sticks and leaves.
Notes. Angry sounds can sometimes be heard when they squabble unseen in their hidden canopies.
Signs. Chewed nuts lying on the ground, especially hazels.
Dreys are easy to spot in tall trees during the winter.
