Common Shrew Sorex araneus castaneus
This tiny species is resident on the Common. it is extremely small with a reddish-brown body and a long pointed snout which is constantly in use during its search for food. It is at home in hedge-banks, ditches and on the edges of woodland.
Food. insects, worms, snails, woodlice and small creatures.
Breeding. Its cup-shaped nest is built on banks. Breeding takes place from May to November. Up to two litters can produce up to twenty young. Not all the young survive as they are preyed upon by owls, hawks, crows, even snakes!
Notes. A high-pitched squeak.
