Common Bat Pipistrellus pipistrellus
This very common bat is regularly seen on the Kinson Common and is our smallest British Bat. Despite only having a body size of 37mm, it is a strong and determined creature. The wing expanse extends to 200mm. Its fur is soft, red-brown above with paler markings below. The ears and the wing membrane appear blackish.
This species is active all night during the warmer periods of the year. One awakened from hibernation in March, it remains until winter comes. It awakens during warmer winter days to feed around mid-day briefly. Sleeping or roosting places include: roofs, behind gutters and pipes,natural crevices and small access points in buildings.
Haunt. Anywhere near trees and open country on the Common.
Food. Flies and beetles.
