Goat Willow or Great Sallow Salix caprea agg.
A small shrub or tree which grows to 10m. It can be found generally around the Common.
This species has more rounded leaves than any other willow. These are dark green and wrinkled above, silky and grey below.
Male trees produce wonderful bright yellow catkins in the springtime. Female trees produce silver catkins. Mention the name, pussy willow, and everyone is familiar with this species.
Being the earliest of all Willows to flower, it is a great asset to insects emerging from winter hibernation.
