Stinging nettles are abundant on the sides of the Main track. There is nothing worse on a walk than brushing too close to them and getting stung! Having said this, there is a very positive case to be made for having nettles on the Common.
Our photograph shows Peacock larvae feasting on them, as do Tortoiseshells, and even the Comma butterfly.
Many of the butterflies on the Common really do depend on plants which we would normally find out of keeping in any other setting. Without nettles, at least 3 species out of 24 present on the Kinson Common would quickly disappear. Next
