Red Admiral Vanessa Atalanta
A strikingly beautiful butterfly, well known to everyone. It is very abundant on the Kinson Common and loves to visit flowers of all types. On the wing it is a graceful glider, especially around tall and sunny leafy glades.
This species is a visitor to Britain and no one is quite sure whether it does hibernate in this country. Its larvae feed on nettles and even thistles and become the familiar late summer butterflies which visit the local area enjoying the late flowers and over ripened fruits. Sadly, once the first hard frost arrives, this species quickly succombs to the colder conditions.
