Small Copper Lycaena phlaeas
This burnished copper coloured butterfly is an extremly quick flyer. It can be observed generally in all types of grassy areas to be found on the Kinson Common from March until October. The larvae of this species feed on docks and sorrels which are very plentiful on the reserve.
Illustrated here is a pristine female which was photographed on grassland known as Pond Scrub at the end of August. Despite the parched nature of the grassland following an extremely hot summer, this species has fayred well locally.
