Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria
This familiar and common brown and cream spotted butterfly is on the wing from April until October. It loves the edges of woodland and enjoys sunning itself in the many sunny glades to be found on the Kinson Common.
Its larvae feed on grasses which are botanically rich on site. It is sometimes noted that there may suddenly be a rapid increase in this species numbers, This is due to the fact that some larvae do strive to reach the full imago state more quickly while others much prefer to reach adulthood more leisurely!
Apart from the obvious early spring emerging butterflies such as the Brimstone, this species will suddenly appear on the scene as an added bonus. As autumn arrives, even on dull November days, this butterfly is likely to be the last species viewed before we say goodbye to viewing butterflies until next springtime arrives.
