The chaffinch is a resident bird around the Kinson Common. The male is brown above with olive shading on its rump and has easy to see white bars on the wings. Its breast is pink and it is has slate-blue colouring on the head. The female is olive brown with white bars on the wings and is a much duller looking bird.
Haunt. As well as being seen around the Common, it also visits local gardens near the nature reserve.
Nest. It nests in the fork of a tree or a bush, usually out of reach. The nest is neatly made using moss, lichens, feathers, hairs and wool fibres.
Eggs. 4-6 are during in April or May. The eggs are grey, pink tinged and brown blotched.
Food. Insects and seeds.
Notes. It announces its presence by a well known repeated "Pink"call. The song is very rhythmical and ends with a flourish.
