The wren is a welcomed permanent resident on the Common. Everyone knows its brown colouring, its dumpy little body and upturned and erect tail. For such a small bird, it really makes its presence known everywhere. Daily it will creep amongst the low vegetation, sometimes announcing its presence by loud and constant trilling sounds.
Haunt. Generally everywhere on the Common, also nearby gardens.
Nest. A beautifully domed structure with a tiny side-entrance. It is built with available local material and is always well hidden in a low bush or tree.
Eggs. 5-12 are laid from April to June. The tiny white eggs are finely speckled with reddish-brown.
Food. All kinds of insects including larvae and spiders.
Notes. When disturbed or annoyed it will "chur", or sometimes a "tit, tit". For such a tiny little bird, its song is both loud, clear, also full of joyous trills.
