Click to hear the sound of the Robin
This small thrush is one of our best loved birds and it is resident around the Common throughout the year. The cock and hen bird are very similiar in appearance. Everyone knows the Robin and no description is really necessary. Young birds are brown speckled and lack the familiar red breast and bluish markings around the head.
Haunt. Everywhere on the Common and local gardens close by.
Nest. In a convenient hole or well hidden place. The nest is made from grasses, wool fibres, hairs and mosses.
Eggs. 5-6 are laid from about March until July. The white eggs have light red speckling.
Food. Insects, worms, garden scraps, also fruits and berries.
Notes. When alarmed, it makes "tic, tic" sounds. The full song is high and clear. It can sing at anytime, even in the middle of the night. In the darker days of the year, its song sounds very mournful.
