The mallard is our commonest wild duck which can be seen at Pepin`s Pond on the Kinson Common throughout the year. The drake`s has a bottle-green head and a white collar. The rest of his plumage is red-brown and greyish in appearance. The duck is dull brown in appearance and both sexes have violet with white-bordered wing bars.
Haunt. Anywhere where there is water on the Kinson Common.
Nest. Well concealed on the ground. It is constructed using grass, available natural vegetation and soft down.
Eggs. 8-12 are laid from March to May. The eggs are usually pale green in colour.
Food. The mallard survives on all kinds of available food, scraps put out by humans. Worms and insects, snails and water creatures, even frogs, grain and berries are also eaten.
