Magpies live in family groups and their glossy black and white plumage makes them easy to identify. They are present on the Kinson Common throughout the year. As many as 30 birds have been seen together in our area and they will help each other if one of them gets into trouble.
Haunt. Everywhere on the Kinson Common.
Nest. High up in trees such as oak. The nest is domed and is made using sticks, mud and roots.
Eggs. 5-8 are laid in April. Sometimes, the eggs are laid earlier in March. During very mild winters, nest making has started before the end of February.
Food. Birds and their eggs, insects, worms, wild fruit and grains, and everything else which is edible!
Notes. Even when unseen, very loud and continous chattering will reveal where they are on the Common.
