The Kingfisher is an occasional visitor to the Kinson Common. Sadly, it does not breed on site. If disturbed, a blue flash is usually seen as it speeds away to seek cover elsewhere.
The upper parts of the plumage are a brilliant blue with a wonderful greenish-gloss on the wings and crown. Ear coverts and undersides are a distinctive chestnut-red. White patches will be noted on the chin and neck areas.
Haunts. All locations where water abounds on the Common. Pepin`s Pond, Dragonfly Hollow, the Waterfall and Central Bog are likely places where it may be briefly glimpsed.
Nest. A suitable hole in a nearby river or stream bank. Fish bones are the nesting material.
Eggs. 6-8 eggs are laid from April to June. The eggs are white and rounded.
Food. Small fish, tadpoles, water insects and shellfish.
Notes. A sharp and loud whistle, also a warbling song.
