This handsome and permanent resident is present on the Kinson Common throughout the year. Its familiar green and yellow markings are well known to everyone in the spring and summer months. At other times in the year, the plumage of both sexes is duller in colour.
Haunt. Everywhere on the Common. The fringes of Poole Lane meadows amongst the sloe thickets are one of its favourite haunts.
Nest. A finely constructed nest is built from available grass, moss, twiglets, hair and soft feathers.
Eggs. 4-6 are laid from April to July. The eggs are cream-coloured and spotted with reddish-brown and nearly black markings.
Food. Seeds and insects.
Notes. "Zwee". "chu, chu, chu", also a continuous twitter.
