Everyone is familiar with this generally green covered resident bird on the Common. In flight, it moves up and down and its distinct colours make it easy to identify. Other features include a yellow rump and crimson-red crown and nape. Even when unseen, it announces its presence by loud tappings on trees.
Haunts. All parts of the Common, especially the wooded areas.
Nest. A tunnelled hole and nest is made in any suitable tree where the wood is found to be decayed.
Eggs. 4-7 are laid during April or May. The eggs are white.
Food. All types of insects, wild fruit and berries, also available nuts. It is partial to ants and will ferret around at ground level to find them.
Notes. Known as "the yaffle", it does echo a loud and laughing "ha-ha-ha-ha". Its call echoes everywhere on the Common.
