This distinctively marked woodpecker is resident throughout the year on the Common. The plumage is black and white above with a creamy white shading to crimson-red underneath. The male`s head has a crimson-red nape patch. Young birds have red crowns. Its presence is often announced by loud drumming sounds as it taps on trees.
Haunt. All tree-lined areas on the Common and especially the Kinson cemetery areas.
Nest. Any suitable hole in a tree.
Eggs. 4-7 are laid during April and may. The eggs are creamy-white in colour.
Food. Insects and larvae. It also eats nuts and berries.
Notes. It makes a cross sounding "quick, quick", making it easy to distinguish from the call sounds uttered by the green woodpecker.
