The Dunnock is a very secretive bird that lives around the Common throughout the year. The plumage is a streaky brown above with slate-grey on the undersides and both sexes are similar. Although this insect loving bird has been described as a sparrow, it is not related to any member of the Sparrow family.
Haunt. Anywhere around the Common and it does visit local gardens.
Nest. The nesting area is usually in a well hidden low bush or hedge. The nest is neatly made from moss, wool fibres, fine grasses and hairs.
Eggs. 4-5 eggs are laid during March to June. The eggs are an exquisite bright turquose-blue.
Food. All kinds of harmful insects and weed seeds.
Notes. Once heard, the sweet song which is high and clear will not be forgotten.
